Each plank of a wooden boat has its own set of tapers and curves that must fit snugly against the previous strake. Peter shows how he makes this happen.

Well, Sean, up top there, said it all but thanks for pointing out the proper orientation of the dividers when scribing a piece to be cut and fit…always in line with the direction the piece has to move.

Genius practicality … to see Peter spile his planks with such rapid-fire efficiency brought back what I thought, 28 years ago when I learned this skill, that it was some arcane geometrical puzzle it took me weeks to master. This is what makes this series so essential – how a pro strips away all the theory with some divider holes and scribbles effected with the stub of a chewed pencil. Let alone how he deals with feather hood ends, is pure, practical genius. He could have a squad of skilled volunteers doing refresher courses if he so desired, yet I reckon he is always thinking many steps ahead, using the head space a boat builder relishes when working solo. His is a model of efficiency no client could ever question.

What a great comment. It is the efficient practicality that comes through in this series.

I agree wholeheartedly and couldn’t have said it better. It’s the simple proven techniques that keep me coming back to various builder series, marveling at the simple ingenuity. Thank you, Peter!
